An Enlightened Family Trip to Tokyo: A Journey of Chaos and Wonder

An Enlightened Family Trip to Tokyo: A Journey of Chaos and Wonder

(Osaka- Aboard the WONDERCRUISE)

***Prelude: Texas to LA - The Rental Car Debacle

My daughter and I jetted off to LAX to rendezvous with the rest of the family: my mom, sister, and her two daughters. But first, let’s talk about the disaster that was Sixt car rentals on Bellanca Ave. They tried to hit us with a smoke fee for a car that already smelled like a chimney. Seriously, Sixt? One star, do not recommend. Anyway, onward to better things!

*** United Airlines: Up, Up, and Away

We shook off the car rental drama and boarded our United Airlines flight to Haneda Airport. Excitement was high, and the plane was buzzing with our anticipation. Quick tip: if you want decent food, sit as close to the front of the plane as possible. United’s offerings aren’t exactly gourmet, and the farther back you are, the worse it gets. Tokyo, here we come!

***Tokyo Arrival: Welcome to the Land of the Rising Fun

Landing in Haneda, we were greeted by our amazing driver from Hakuu Co Ltd. If you ever need a ride in Tokyo, these guys are the real MVPs—super convenient and friendly. We checked into the Sotetsu Fresa Inn Higashi Shinjuku. Sure, the rooms were small (it’s Tokyo, what do you expect?), but they were spotless and packed with awesome amenities.

***Dinner Delight: Ichiran Ramen and Shinjuku Stroll

(Ichiran-Tonkatsu)
Our first meal? Ichiran Ramen in Shinjuku Kabuki-cho. Open 24 hours and serving up bowls of heaven. Post-ramen, we wandered around Shinjuku, gawking at the Godzilla Head and exploring Kabukicho Tower. Tokyo at night is like stepping into a neon dreamscape. To top off the night, we witnessed a street fight in Shinjuku—talk about a wild welcome! Nothing like some real-life drama to start the trip.

***Saturday Shenanigans: Convenience Store Breakfast and Digital Wonderland

Saturday morning, we raided 7-Eleven for breakfast. If you haven't had a fruit sandwich and melon bread from a Japanese convenience store, you haven’t lived. Onigiri, ice cream, coffee, pastries—we couldn’t get enough. The convenience stores in Japan are a daily ritual, and we couldn’t survive without our daily fix.

Then it was off to TeamLab Planets, a digital art museum where we immersed ourselves in jaw-dropping interactive exhibits. Instagram was begging for these pics.

Next stop: Sunshine City in Ikebukuro. This place was packed like sardines in a can, and it seemed to have a million stores. The Sanrio Cafe was cute but the food? Meh. We hit up the Miffy Store, Ghibli Store, and grabbed some One Piece merch for my daughter. Shopping in Japan is a next-level experience.

#### Sunday Funday: Temples, Streets, and Skytree

(Sensoji Temple)
Sunday was a mix of ancient and modern. We started at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa—stunning and full of photo ops. I made everyone shake a fortune stick, much to my sister’s mock horror. Nakamise-Dori Street was a snack heaven, and Kagetsudo Melon Pan was a mouthgasm.

Next, we stormed Akihabara, the geek capital of the world, and devoured some insane grub at Motomura. We ended the day at Tokyo Skytree, soaking in epic views of the city.

#### Monday Madness: DisneySea Extravaganza

(Tokyo Disney Sea)
Tokyo DisneySea was next, and it did not disappoint. We took a bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal—so easy. The food was mostly a win, except for a potato churro that was just plain wrong. Pro tip: skip it. We stuffed ourselves silly and wandered the park until we dropped.

#### Tuesday: Kyoto in the Rain

We caught an early Shinkansen to Kyoto, grabbing bento boxes and vending machine coffee along the way. It poured all day, but chilling in our ryokan with my mom was a rare treat. The Ryokan Ryokufuso was pure bliss, especially the bathhouse. The rest of the family braved the rain to explore Nishiki Market.

(Kimono Tea Ceremony)

#### Wednesday: From Kyoto to Osaka

Before leaving Kyoto, we hit up a Kimono Tea Ceremony at Maikoya. Dressed in kimonos and sipping tea—it was pure Zen. Then we hopped a train to Osaka and took a Wonder Cruise along Dotonbori. The lights, the sights, the vibes—Osaka knows how to party on water. We also indulged in all the trendy foods we’ve seen blowing up on TikTok. From fluffy pancakes to cheese tarts, Osaka’s food scene is a TikTok dream come true.

#### Thursday: Pigs and Purikura in Harajuku

(MIPIG)

Back in Tokyo, we visited Mipig Cafe in Harajuku. Tiny pigs, people! It was cuteness overload. We explored quirky shops and indulged in Harajuku’s wild and wonderful eats. Kura Sushi was a highlight—delicious and fun.

#### Friday: Retail Therapy in Asakusa

Friday was our day to shop ‘til we dropped. We headed back to Nakamise-Dori Street for some serious retail therapy. This place has it all: 10 yen coins, candied strawberries, and an endless array of souvenirs. We also treated ourselves to a feast at Gyukaku—grilling our own meat was an experience we’ll never forget. Then we hit Louis Vuitton, Gucci, ABC Mart, and Starbucks (the Banana Creme Brulee was a tart shocker). Retail therapy at its finest.

(Hoshino Souffle' Pancakes)

#### Saturday: Sayonara, Tokyo

Our final breakfast was at Hoshino Coffee, and it was the perfect send-off. Our reliable driver from Hakuu Co Ltd got us to the airport on time. As we boarded our flight, we waved goodbye to Tokyo, hearts full of memories and suitcases stuffed with souvenirs.

### Conclusion

(Dotonbori)

This trip to Tokyo was a whirlwind of epic proportions—an adventure packed with amazing sights, delectable food, and unforgettable experiences. Even with a few bumps (hello again, Sixt), Japan’s charm and hospitality made it a journey we’ll cherish forever. Arigato, Tokyo! You were a badass host.
